“Desires” is a musical project that has been three years in the making, and let me tell you, the journey has been nothing short of incredible. From the initial spark of an idea to the final notes, every step of the way has been filled with passion, creativity, and a whole lot of heart.

I started this project with a simple desire to create something special, something that resonates with people on a deep level. The process of composing and putting it all together has been like weaving a tapestry of emotions, experiences, and dreams. Each note, each lyric, and each beat is a piece of my soul poured into the music.

What makes “Desires” truly exciting is the collaboration with some of my favourite artists. They bring their unique flavours to the mix, adding layers of depth and richness to the sound. Working with them has been like catching lightning in a bottle – the synergy and creative energy were off the charts.

Their contributions have elevated the project to new heights, and I couldn’t be more grateful for their involvement. Now that the project is complete, the excitement to release it is palpable. It’s like holding a treasure chest filled with emotions and stories, and I can’t wait to share it with the world. The anticipation is like waiting for the curtain to rise on a stage you’ve been preparing for your entire life.

These songs are not just music; they are pieces of me. They represent my hopes, dreams, and the countless hours of hard work and dedication. The time has come to open the doors and let people into this world I’ve created. It’s both nerve-wracking and exhilarating, like standing on the edge of a cliff, ready to leap into the unknown.

As the release date approaches depending on when this is read, I find myself filled with gratitude and excitement. This project is a testament to the power of persistence and following your dreams. I hope that when people listen to “Desires,” they feel the same emotions that went into creating it – the joy, the pain, the love, and the longing.

This music is not just mine; it’s meant to be shared, and I can’t wait for others to experience the journey I’ve poured into these tracks. It’s a dream come true, and I’m ready to let it soar.

The post Shazam unveils 2024 predictions & top artists to watch appeared first on HYPE Magazine.

]]>
With its 300 million global monthly users and millions of daily song recognitions from around the world, Shazam’s unique ability to accurately predict the next breaking artist is unparalleled and has become a reliable and invaluable tool for both artists and fans over the years.

Today, Shazam unveiled its annual Predictions 2024 playlist, a 50-track selection of artists that are perfectly poised to have a breakthrough year. Additionally, Shazam spotlighted five artists from the list who have the potential to break out globally in 2024 and five artists who are gaining popularity regionally.

Based on Shazam’s uniquely predictive data and algorithms, and coupled with the expertise of Apple Music’s global editorial team, this incredible selection of artists show early indicators of future growth — early and consistent momentum in Shazam activity, as well as discovery trends in more than one country. It’s a remarkably global and diverse bunch, hailing from 21 countries and spanning sounds from French pop to contemporary gospel.

Last year’s predictions list was the most successful so far, with 80% of the artists reaching Apple Music’s Daily Top 100 in 2023, across 171 countries worldwide, and 7 of the 50 artists peaking in Shazam’s Global Top 200. These included Stephen Sanchez peaking at No. 6 in January 23, Ice Spice also hitting No. 6 in March 2023, and Young Miko reaching No. 58 in April 2023. 13 of them also made the Top 10 of Shazam’s national charts, including Ice Spice (in 53 charts), Stephen Sanchez (44 charts), Hotel Ugly (28 charts), Ski Aggu (17 charts), Young Miko (12 charts) and ANGEL DIOR (11 charts). On average, Shazam’s class of 2023 Predictions artists had a 167% year-on-year increase in Shazams compared to 2022.

Check out Shazam’s artists to watch below and listen to the full Shazam 2024 Predictions playlist on Apple Music.

Five artists with global breakthrough potential:

Bloody Civilian

“People are most likely Shazamming my music in Ubers,” the Nigerian singer-songwriter Emoseh Khamofu tells Apple Music. Bloody Civilian’s streams and Shazams have been on the rise since November 2022, when she was featured on the soundtrack to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, scoring her first Daily Top 100 hit. Bloody Civilian made her Shazam chart debut in April 2023 with “I Don’t Like You,” which also became her second Daily Top 100 hit. But it’s in the latter half of 2023 that things really started to pick up, with her debut EP Anger Management reaching the top 10 of the Afrobeats albums chart in 69 countries worldwide, including nine where it reached No. 1. Her streams on editorial playlists grew over 50% in the last six months of the year.

The artist says that next year she’ll focus on building community: “Growing my fanbase, connecting with more creatives, and giving back,” she says. “I want to be able to inspire young women to strive for bigger and better, to not stay within any box.”

Flyana Boss

All the ingredients are there for Flyana Boss to have an absolutely massive 2024. The Los Angeles hip-hop duo, composed of Bobbi LaNea Tyler and Folayan Omi Kunerede, already have a collaboration with Missy Elliot with “You Wish,” which helped them reach a new peak in Shazams worldwide and introduced them to new listeners on Apple Music. “It makes us really excited to think that people could be casually living, hear our song, and feel inclined to take out their phone to find out who we are,” Bobbi Lanea Tyler tells Apple Music. All told, their streams on Apple Music soared over 3,000% in 2023 as their music was featured on Viral Hits, High Maintenance and Rap Life. They also landed on the New Music Daily cover in 2023 with the release of “Bitch Imma Star.”

Next year promises big things. “We’re going on tour, that’s a big one, and we’re releasing more music. [It’s] time to build the Flyana Boss world.”

Kenya Grace

Kenya Grace got the world hooked in 2023 with her dance-pop hit “Strangers,” a song that went from her bedroom to the top 40 of Apple Music’s Global Daily Top 100 in a matter of months. “I hope people are hearing [and IDing] my music in clubs,” she tells Apple Music, regarding the breathy, shuffling record built for a sweaty—albeit mellow—dance floor. “Going out when I was a teenager really shaped my artistry. It was so inspiring to hear dance music at clubs and parties for the first time.” From June to December her streams grew over 12,000% on Apple Music worldwide as “Strangers” was featured on editorial playlists like Today’s Hits, A-List Pop, and danceXL. All told the song reached the Daily Top 100 in more than 100 countries worldwide, and reached No. 1 on 16 different national Shazam charts, the most for a song by a solo British act in 2023.

In 2024, the artist wants to drop a full-length album and perhaps throw herself deeper into the party. “I want to release a body of work—and I’d love to play some festivals!”

The Last Dinner Party

Given the success of their first few singles, British art rock band The Last Dinner Party are set for a big debut when Prelude to Ecstasy arrives next month. The band’s debut single “Nothing Matters” is The Last Dinner Party’s most Shazamed track to date, charting in Australia, Austria and Belgium and also became their first song to reach Apple Music’s Daily Top 100. “One of the first moments that made us feel like real musicians—and no longer just pretending to be—was when a friend heard ‘Nothing Matters’ in a nightclub in Australia and saw a few hands shoot up to Shazam it,” The Last Dinner Party’s Abigail Morris tells Apple Music. “It’s so surreal to imagine that happening in countries all over the world.” Subsequent singles like “Sinner” and “My Lady of Mercy” also reached Shazam charts and contributed to an uplift in tags over the autumn, leading the band to be featured in the latest Apple Music Sessions program.

Next year, the group plans to release their debut album. “That will be our main priority,” Morris says. “That and, of course, fame and fortune.”

RIIZE

K-pop boy band RIIZE made it impossible for the world not to fall for them with their catchy, funky and feel-good hit “Get a Guitar.” The song surfaced on Shazam’s Japan Discovery chart for the first time in September, and by October, it had soared to No. 1 on South Korea’s Daily Top 100 — their first song to achieve this feat. “Get a Guitar” went on to reach No. 11 on Shazam’s global K-Pop chart, and became one of the biggest hits in Korea in 2023: It finished the year at No. 65 on Apple Music’s Top Songs of 2023: Korea chart.

“I want to perform in various countries and meet [our fanbase] BRIIZE who have cheered for us [around the world],” SHOTARO tells Apple Music. ANTON says the key will be continuing to hone their craft as a collective. “As important as it is to go global and meet more BRIIZE, we want to be a band that can give [people] precious memories with good music for a long time,” he says. “Dreaming big and growing as a band is our goal.” Recently, ANTON has been using a catchphrase for motivation. “I’ve been saying ‘RIIZE will continue to rise,’” he says. “It’s on us members to make that a reality.”

Five artists gaining popularity regionally:

aupinard (France)
French singer aupinard’s music—a blend of French Pop and Bossa Nova—is making its way through Shazam’s French-speaking national charts.

JACOTÉNE (Australia)
Australian R&B/Soul singer-songwriter JACOTÉNE has been making a splash on Shazam’s Australian charts with both “Don’t Let Him Say Goodbye (Demo)” and “you already know [demo_2021].wav.” The artist was just signed internationally to Sony Music.

SIRA (Germany)
German Dance and Hip Hop/Rap producer SIRA has had several songs chart across Germany, Austria and Switzerland since 2022. With “9 bis 9,” his highest-charting song to date on Shazam, the artist has shown potential to break outside of his comfort zone and reach new international listeners, entering charts in places like France.

Sukha (India)
“Attraction” with prodGK was Punjabi and Hip Hop/Rap artist Sukha’s Shazam chart debut in India, spending a month in the Top 200 songs in the country. Since then, Sukha has been gaining momentum with his release “8 Asle (feat. Gurlej Akhtar)” by Sukha & Chani Nattan, reaching charts in Canada and the UK.

Yarge (Venezuela)
Venezuelan singer-songwriter Yarge was part of Apple Music’s monthly Supernova spotlight in the US, which features emerging Latin music artists. Yarge entered Shazam’s charts in Chile with “WEEKENES,” her top song on Shazam, and has recently been trending in Peru and Paraguay.

As a fresh face on the scene, it is imperative to stake your claim by releasing a steady stream of music for prospective fans to enjoy. The concept of flooding the streets is nothing new and the methodology yields fruits for new artists who follow this route. Scumie is one artist that has followed this route by giving her fans a regular dose of her sauce and she has not wasted any time with the release of her single pack titled ‘DRACO’.

The single pack opens with the song ‘Shots’, which is an enchanting track filled with warping production that gives the song a unique hue. The song sees Scumie take on a more melancholic approach from a lyrical point of view. Her approach perfectly suits the nature of the production with its almost ‘trippy’ atmosphere.

She follows up the song with the song ‘Bean’ which sees the young starlet bring a more melodic edge to her music. Her flow effortlessly floats atop the production giving the song an ‘onrepeat’ feeling to it. She closes the single pack with the song ‘Dim out the lights’. The song feels like a combination of the previous two songs, carrying the best of both worlds. Ultimately, the ‘DRACO’ single pack is experimental in its nature and is a welcomed foray into the talents of Scumie. Listen to ‘DRACO’ below.

Ntatao is an emerging talent within the game who is known for his unwavering dedication to the craft of rap. The young artist has received co-signs from some of the most prominent cultural commentators in the game right now. With his stock being as high as ever, it was only fitting we sat down with the artist to discuss the latest happenings in his career thus far.

How long have you been making music, and how did it start for you?

I started making music in 2019 and at that stage of my career, I was making a couple of freestyles which I would upload to Soundcloud because I was at the very infancy of my career. The freestyles were covers I used to perform of some of my favourite artists at the time. Prior to that, the only writing experience I had was for writing for theatre. In 2020, I took writing as a subject but I really struggled with that so I dropped out of writing and started writing for myself through raps and that is when I really started to get into the swing of things and that eventually ended up in me writing for my first mixtape, Bodega Baby, which came out in 2021.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would you choose and why?

I’m not entirely sure because I consider myself to be more of a beat nerd. So at the top of my list are producers like Steveisfrench, Michael Touhy, Trigganasty but Beatmochini. In terms of rappers, I would like to collab with Stino Le Thwenny, Khuli Chana and Maglera Doe Boy. On an unconventional note, I would like to make a song with Zuma from Amaroto.

What is your proudest achievement to date?

I am proud of how far I am in my rap career. Every time I release music, I am proud that I am taking this rap thing really seriously. However, I think my biggest moment would have to be receiving acknowledgement from The Sobering Podcast.

Which artist is, in your opinion, the GOAT?

I would have to say Cassper Nyovest because he is the one rapper that has influenced me the most based on how he managed to commercialise himself. AKA is another artist I feel belongs in the GOAT conversation because he is a brilliant artist. Furthermore, I would include someone like Khuli Chana because no one has managed to bend the language (seTswana) like that. I actually learnt seTswana through his raps. In terms of the pen, I would put someone like Mick Jenkins up there. I regard him as one of the greatest rappers I have witnessed in my lifetime.

What can we expect from you in the coming year?

I have a mixtape coming out called HaNtatao Radio. It’s a conceptual mixtape that I am currently working on and I already have some amazing features on it.

What is your first memory of hip-hop?

My first memory of hip-hop came from back home in Angola. I used to dress like an American rapper and 50 Cent was one of the biggest artists at the time and so I dressed like him. Due to the way I dressed, people would always ask me to freestyle *laughs*.

What was the culture shock that came with you moving to America?

Moving to America from Angola was a crazy experience because everything was so different in comparison to back home. When I arrived, I had to graduate from English school before I went to college and completing my studies. Following that, my father found out about my passion for music and he wasn’t impressed at all. This was mainly due to the fact that being a rapper came with so many bad connotations like drugs and violence and my father didn’t want me to go down that path but it was up to me to show him that I wouldn’t go down that path.

I was listening to your tape and you are quite a versatile rapper. How would you describe your sound?

My sound is really diverse. I choose to do this because I don’t want to become synonymous with one type of sound. In all honesty, I don’t view myself as just a rapper; I see myself as an artist. I have songs in genres like Afrobeat and La Rumba just to flex my versatility.

Which sound would you say was the most difficult for you to execute ans which sound comes the most natural to you?

I’m not sure… I didn’t struggle with any sound. I just feel the beat and I vibe with it. If I’m feeling the beat, I’m just going to hop on it. My manager keeps telling me how Amapiano is big out here and when I listened to it, I thought to myself, “I could rap on this”. So it all falls down to whether or not I am vibing with the production.

What is your creative process?

I really like to listen to the beat and the vibe with it and then I vibe on it.

Can you tell me about the mental state you were in when you conceptualised your album To The Top?

I have been grinding in this music thing from 2015 and i just felt as though it is time to take this music thing

Would you describe yourself as a pan-African artist because you have so many sonic influences?

I love to mix it up and play with different sounds to make something completely new and authentic. I don’t want to be the type of rapper who wants to be known for having one type of sound.

Your music carries a level of introspection. Can you tell me some of the struggles you have had to overcome in pursuing music?

I have had to take a lot of losses in the pursuit of my career. I have had the unfortunate experience of having to deal with people who take part in shady practices. That is honestly the biggest thing I have had to overcome as an independent artist.

If someone were to ask me to put them onto Tiger, which song should I play them first?

That just depends on how I am feeling that day. You can really play anything. With me, it doesn’t really matter because my music is so versatile.

Would you say the main purpose of your music is to make people feel good and have fun?

Yes, because life is too short to be too serious. I like to smile and be happy and that’s the way I want to live my life.

After listening to To The Top, what do you want South African audiences to take away from Tiger as an artist?

I would say that I want people to see Tiger as cool, calm and collected individual who wants to have fun and enjoy life.

Nadia Nakai’s new offering if different to anything she’s done before. In her recent release, “Runnin’ Back,” Nadia Nakai showcases a fusion of grunge and rap alongside Sauwcy. The instrumental, adorned with rock chords, provides a notably edgy ambiance. Nakai delivers a standout performance, possibly her best of the year. Sauwcy’s naturally aggressive cadence seamlessly complements the hook, giving the track a distinctive ‘can’t mess with me’ vibe. This collaborative effort is a result of two artists tapping into that ‘hunger’ that we’ve been missing in recent trap songs. Nakai’s evolving style within the rap landscape is one to keep a close eye on.

South Africa doesn’t have much of culture for Christmas collections or albums with Rowlene’s Sant’s Baby being the first one I have come across in music. Traditionally, Christmas single usually revolve around a traditional Christmas sound and that is why I was tentative do give this single pack a listen. With that being said, I am glad I gave it a chance because it is an artistic interpretation of what a Christmas collection can sound like. The collection is filled with warm and full-production that give Rowlene the space to enter a variety of flows on all 3 songs. Listen to the “Santa’s Baby” below.

Kashcpt is seen as the swiss army knife of the hip-hop scene and his versatility is unmatched and you would be hard pressed to find another artists who can deliver on the same range as him.

This new single see him sing above a sample lead production with soothing strings. From the onset, the single is built for collaboration with Kashcpt opting to only handle chorus duties and left the rap duties to Frank Casino and Priddy ugly, who both make significant contributions to balance out Kash’s vocal performance with raps. Overall, this song is a highly palatable single for SA hip-hop fans. Listen to the single below.

This past weekend, we were at the colourful festival that is Rocking the Daisies and what an experience it was. The good people at Klipdrift let us into their activation space for us to experience what they have to offer.

I approached a large board with flaps. Under each flap could either be a prize that I could receive, or I could draw a blank. Fortune was on my side as I opened a flap that would see me receiving a prize. Beaming in excitement, I headed back to the promoters who welcomed me in to collect my prize. The prize I received was a cooling towel and given the rate at which I sweat, it was a welcomed prize.

Upon approaching the activation space, you are greeted by promoters who are decked out in red Klipdrift dresses. Their greetings were warm and welcoming, almost as if we were part of the Klipdrift family.

The promoter then told me about the amazing prizes that I could win if I purchased two Klipdrift products. I could either get a fresh new haircut or try my hand at winning a prize. Naturally, I bought myself two Klipdrifts and Cola’s and tried my hand at winning a prize because I already had a fresh haircut to attend Rocking the Daisies.

Despite the thrill that I received by winning a prize, the amount of gaming experiences that were taking place at the activation were the real prize. I tentatively approached the gaming console because two people were playing Mortal Kombat, a game I haven’t played since I was in primary school. After watching people duel to the death – not literally of course – I stepped up for my turn. How did i fare you might ask? Well… let’s just say that it definitely didn’t go as planned. However, in all fairness, i hadn’t played the game in a decade so I held my own.

As much as I was having fun on the PS5, the penultimate gaming experience came via the Formula 1 racing simulator. After watching a couple of people completly flame out, I stepped up to the hot seat. Unlike previous players, I decided to choose a race track that has a lot of straight stretches in because as confident as I am in my driving, I am no Formula 1 driver.

Overall, the Klipdrift activation space was by far the best activation space at Rocking the Daisies because of the number of entertainment options that were there for us to enjoy. Thank you to the Klipdrift family for the experience.
