Irish whiskey brand, Jameson, officially launched its new concept platform dubbed Jameson Supper Club at Johannesburg’s quintessential restaurant, A Streetbar Named Desire owned by Thomas Hughes who is a seasoned chef and restaurateur

The platform, which was introduced to market last night (31 March 2022), was framed under the pretext of supporting its partner outlets that had been extremely impacted by the ramifications of COVID-19 regulations and restriction, which in 2021, saw many of these outlets unable to operate at optimum level, thus affecting revenue income for these outlets.

“As a brand, we have always strived to place our consumer and partner outlets at the forefront of everything we do. So, when the devastating impact of COVID-19 started having its toll on their operations, we knew that as Jameson we had to find ways to be able to provide some respite,” says Jameson Brand Manager, Vuyisile Dlepu.

He adds that when the pandemic battered many of its outlets, it compelled them as brand to find ways of cultivating meaningful ways to build brand experiences that would further earn them brand equity and salience. 

“Together with our partner agency, RAPT Creative, we were able to not only conceptualise a campaign platform alone, but we further executed it at a level that as attested by the reaction of market, will allow us to roll it out in other provinces to ensure that the experience is shared amongst our other partner outlets,” adds Dlepu. 

The event which boasted a star-studded guestlist and entertainment from main celebrity DJs Lamiez Holworthy and DBN Gogo, was well received by consumers with a hive of social media posts making the rounds across platforms and an eclectic sensory experience that left them wanting more.

Jameson Supper Club which first launched in Johannesburg will in the next few months make an appearance in major cities – Cape Town and Durban.

An ode to adventure, Fall 2022 explores the idea of escapism in the everyday. Rooted in the free spirit which defines Scotch & Soda’s home city of Amsterdam – and its outside-the-box thinking – the collection unites volume, utility, and symbols of sea and sky to deliver an eclectic, modern wardrobe that riffs on the theme of exploration.

The Scotch & Soda Fall Women’s wear includes pops of bright orange evoke the sunsets of endless horizons, while muted tones of sand and driftwood nod to island life. The unique airplane prints playfully captures the essence of adventure. Sometimes, it’s used all over, like the crisp organic cotton shirt and belted wrap skirt. The global ongoing Converse City Forests campaign continues to bring beauty to bare and forgotten walls. Converse is launching their fourth city forest mural this November, but this time they are doing it bigger and better.

The JEWEL CITY Precinct is an extension of the existing Maboneng Precinct located in Johannesburg CBD. The vision for Jewel City is to evolve the precinct, revolutionizing a significant portion of Joburg’s inner city and incorporating business, housing and creative spaces to be used by people from all walks of life.

Head graffiti artist: Seth Piemental, popularly known as African Ginger, along with the Converse All Stars have taken over the whole of Jewel City with their magnificent murals. These artworks are not just beautiful, but they tell a meaningful story of their own lives and life experiences. The title of the mural is Our Story.

The concept:
African Ginger held an exciting brainstorming session with 8 All Stars. They each wrote 50-100 words about a topic that they are passionate about, he then chose powerful phrases and sentences linking to each topic and incorporated them onto the artwork in a Basquiat-esque approach. According to Seth “I want to highlight the power of these phrases and have them legible as motivation and acceptance of the self, one’s beliefs, one’s ethnicity and promote kindness to the self”.

The takeover:

South African rapper and music producer ZULO has just revealed that his long-awaited debut EP Talk to Me Naace, is expected to be released on April 22 with guest appearances from the multifaceted Money Badoo, Blood & Water-singer Frya and the reggae overlord Don Dada. Preceded by the previously released singles ‘Portals’ and ‘JUST VAARBS”’, ZULO follows up with the EP’s third single ‘Love Your Life’ just weeks ahead of the April 22 release.

Produced by ZULO himself and Swaeno Iago, the single continues the texture of its predecessor ‘JUST VAARBS’, merging Four7’s South African house classic “J’Adore” and Kool & The Gang’s “Summer Madness” to create life’s celebratory anthem as ZULO highlights his spiritual awakening. The official music video is expected to be released on March 31.

After ‘JUST VAARBS’ dropped last year, I wanted to explore that texture a bit more. Since majority of the project was written and recorded in 2020, I wanted a song that reflected on my life in the second half of 2021, from the time ‘Portals’ was released. This was the last song I made for the EP and, quite simply, puts my spiritual awakening at the very centre, after losing and regaining my confidence – ZULO

The EP’s artwork, designed by Zayaanah Albertyn, depicts ZULO’s mascot Tricky, the Bunny being lifted by the light as lightning strikes around him to cinematically signify the rise of the Supreme Leader ZULO.

With ZULO’s new Talk to Me Naace EP still on the way, just a day ago the artist revealed the official artwork for it which was created by @zaysontodd that looks to depict ZULO’s animated character floating up towards the clouds creating this almost heavenly ascension mood.. Hip hop artist illRow reently released his latest project which is  a 3-track EP titled Medi-Kasi which was produced by Shaney Jay and has only one feature, Cape Town Afrikaans Rap sensation Mr. Heinz. The EP is said to be the  follow up to his major single which dropped late  last year, titled ‘Rands in the West’  which featured YoungstaCPT and R&B/hip hop Vocalist Nate Johnson.  Keeping his style consistent but also looking for a more commercial feel to his music, illRow decided to team with renowned Cape Town producer  Shaney Jay to bring all the beats to life and give the project that energy it deserves, while maintaining the raw feel illRow is very well known for.

This EP was made to flex my skill on a set of commercial beats so that I can prove anything is possible in the very close-minded industry whereby we believe we need to conform to a specific standard. Shaney Jay requested that I send him a batch of my unfinished skeleton beats, so that he could work on it and call it a collaboration. He sent me a batch back and told me ”I wanted to make you sound more commercial on these bro” and that’s exactly what I believe it came out as.

Directed by Jesse Ray Diamond, last week Elaine also dropped off her new visuals for ‘Shine’ which is the single that’s ushered in her new musical era… As mentioned in our post about the drop, this song finds Elaine offering a pop sound that is quite different from what you would expect from her and narratively, it carries a very motivational tone as heard throughout the lyrics. Visually the music video is stunning as we see scenes of a young girl witnessing a shooting star spectacle before she enters her home which then leads to us viewing scenes of Elaine performing the tune. In some parts she interacts with a “leading man” but we mostly see solo performances. This is a very good looking video which you can also peep below.

Earlier this week  Hennessy introduced ‘In the Paint’ to Johannesburg which is a unique artistic initiative that is said to bring the Never Stop Never Settle spirit of the brand to local communities through basketball and art.

The collaboration demonstrates Hennessy’s long-standing commitment towards supporting talented artists who embody the brand’s ethos, continuing a decade of meaningful artistic collaborations.

In The Paint is part of a global series of artistic collaborations based around basketball in the community, with the first initiative having launched in Montreal, Canada in 2021,” says Khomotso Ledwaba, Marketing Manager South Africa. “We’re excited to announce the second instalment here in Johannesburg – a first for the African continent. Basketball has great potential locally and we are looking forward to celebrating the spirit of the game together with the community.

Blending urban culture and cognac, the court design draws inspiration from the diverse, indigenous craft techniques of the Southern regions of Africa whilst also celebrating the vibrancy and talent of its people. Featuring a sun at its centre, the warmth of the continent is depicted alongside ripple patterns to mimic the flow of the Charente River in Cognac, which played an integral role in the historical success of the brand. The river carried the precious cognac barrels along the maritime trading routes leading to the expansion of Hennessy around the world; today the brand can be found in over 160 countries.

In the court design, R!OT makes use of the iconic “Bras Armé” symbol that is synonymous with Hennessy, but subtly redesigned to integrate the NBA partnership with basketball in hand. The robust colours showcased throughout the design represent the energy of both the game and more importantly Africa, and the creative beat of the African people.

“It’s a beautiful ode to Africa,” says R!OT. “For me, it was important to incorporate and pay tribute to contemporary African art inspired by Zimbabwe and South Africa. I’m honoured to have collaborated with Hennessy on this project to create a space where people can enjoy themselves together as a community.”

The Zoo Lake court opened its doors to the public on 12 March 2022.
